The Juventus superstar became the first player to earn over $1 billion (R18 billion) from his accumulated salaries and sponsorship deals over the years.

However, Lionel Messi is expected to follow his longstanding rival into the billionaires club once he has received all earnings for the 2020/21 campaign.

So far, boxer Floyd Mayweather, Formula One driver Michael Schumacher, golfers Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods, and basketball legend Michael Jordan are the only other sportsmen who have broken the $1 billion income barrier.

Of his over $1 billion earnings, Ronaldo has reportedly accumulated a net worth of $450 million (R8.1 billion), the joint-most along with former Manchester United and Real Madrid star David Beckham.

The richest manager, meanwhile, is understood to be Jose Mourinho, with an estimated net worth of $100 million (R1.5 billion).

The 57-year-old has been coaching top-level football since his breakthrough with FC Porto in 2002 after short initial roles at Benfica and Uniao de Leiria.

Following stints with Chelsea (twice), Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United and now Tottenham Hotspur, the Portuguese himself has become a huge brand, making money from his club salaries as well as several sponsorship deals.

Mourinho is followed by Zinedine Zidane in second place, with the Frenchman's net worth estimated to be $70 million (R1.1 billion) – you can see the full top six, which also includes Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, in the gallery above!
