Benin Boss: Nigeria Want Us To Beat Bafana

The Benin boss has made a surprise admission about Nigeria's hopes for his upcoming matchup against South Africa.

The Benin head coach has stated that the Nigerian national team will be hoping his side can achieve a win against Bafana Bafana later this week.

On Tuesday, Hugo Broos' charges will be hoping to extend their lead at the top of Group C in the CAF FIFA World Cup qualification groups when they face the Cheetahs.

Before the latest phase of qualifiers commenced, South Africa were tied at the top of the mini-league alongside Rwanda and Benin, but after their 2-0 victory over Lesotho, they have distanced themselves from the chasing pack.

While the 1996 African champions were able to defeat Likuena, Benin were held to a 2-2 draw against Zimbabwe. The Leopards will now face South Africa in Ivory Coast, the same nation where they managed to secure third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and their head coach Gernot Rohr has emphasised the need to win, but also claimed that his former side Nigeria would be rooting for him.

"The group is very close with South Africa two points ahead of us and three more than Rwanda. You have Nigeria who have gotten their first win also behind us.

"I really think we have to beat South Africa because every team in the group has to beat the other team.

"Nigeria will definitely go all out to win against Zimbabwe. My former players will want me to beat South Africa and it's the same for all teams playing on Tuesday in the group."

The German tactician had a prolonged tenure with the Super Eagles, coaching them between 2016 and 2021, but shortly before the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, he was sacked.

Since his sacking, there has been a lack of stability in the three-time African champions' managerial position, but a win over South Africa on Tuesday will likely go a long way in helping Eric Chelle's side close the gap to Bafana.
