Abha Legend: Mosimane Has Made Matters Worse

An ex-Abha Club star has claimed that Pitso Mosimane's appointment as their manager has "made matters worse".

When the South African tactician was appointed as the head coach of the Leaders of the South at the beginning of 2024, he was given the mandate of keeping the team in the Saudi Pro League come the end of the campaign.

Abha had been in horrid form for the entirety of the season up to that point – under Czech manager Czeslaw Michniewicz and Youssef Manai, they had only managed to accumulate 14 points with a -30 goal difference, the worst in the league.

Following Mosimane's introduction, however, the Kagiso native has helped give Abha a boost to their ambitions of keeping their place among the Saudi elite, with the team having grabbed 11 points from the 10 matches he has managed so far.

Despite the side's mini-resurgence under the three-time CAF Champions League-winning coach, Mosimane has come under scrutiny from a former Abha star Ahmed Mahrez, who has stated that while the side's struggles have been present for a while, the South African has caused their situation to become even more dire.

"Mosimane made matters worse," Mahrez told Kooora. "There is no way of playing, no style that suits his players, and nothing new as it is, similar players on the field, who have passed all the results from one to eight, and they do not have any fighting spirit."
