Two of the eight stadiums have been completed, while three more are set to open this year.

The Khalifa International Stadium and the Al Janoub Stadium are fully operational, with the Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan Stadium and Al Bayt Stadium expected to be inaugurated within the next 10 months.

"With 1 000 days to go, Qatar stands where no other host did before. Qatar wants to amaze the world and is on track to achieve it," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said, according to the world football governing body's official website.

"The FIFA World Cup 2022 will be a breakthrough from a social and cultural perspective. It will open the doors of this football-mad region, offering a new perspective to locals and foreigners, bringing people together and serving as a tool for common understanding."

The tournament will be the first to take place in November/December in order to prevent the showpiece being played in the hot Qatar summer.

Seven stadiums were built from scratch, while the Khalifa International Stadium was redeveloped. The designs incorporate the modern architecture and cultural highlights of Qatar, as well as new innovations such as stadium-cooling technology, which will keep the temperature inside the stadiums at about 23 to 25 degrees.
