Man City Extend FA Cup Defence With Late Winner At Spurs

Defending champions Manchester City advanced to the next round of the FA Cup after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on Friday night.

Report: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Manchester City

Date: 26 January 2024

Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

City manager Pep Guardiola gave a start to young Oscar Bobb, who scored the winner against Newcastle United while Kevin de Bruyne was only named on the bench once again.

The Citizens had the ball in the back of the net after just eight minutes when Bobb slotted home from Julian Alvarez's cross, but celebrations were cut short due to the offside flag.

Other than the early disallowed goal, clear-cut chances were hard to come by on both ends of the field despite the game being played at a high tempo.

Unfortunately, that proved to be the trend for the rest of the first half as both Citizens and Spurs were let down by their decision-making in the final third.

Guardiola's troops should have been ahead shortly after the break when Phil Foden sent a cross towards Julian Alvarez, who looked certain to score until Micky Van de Ven cleared his effort off the line.

Both coaches looked to their bench after the hour mark, as Guardiola threw on De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku while Spurs welcomed back James Maddison for his first appearance since November.

With time running out and a replay on the cards, City got the breakthrough in the 88th minute when Nathan Ake poked home from close range after Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario failed to clear De Bruyne's corner.
