Man Utd Avoid Shock Collapse To Book FA Cup Final Spot

Manchester United will face Manchester City in the FA Cup final after defeating Coventry City on penalties at Wembley Stadium.

FA Cup

Result: Coventry City 3-3 Manchester United

Date: 21 April 2024

Venue: Wembley Stadium

Harry Maguire was United's only fit central defender as Casemiro was moved into the defence, with Scott McTominay recalled into the midfield.

The game's first big chance fell to United on 18 minutes when Casemiro did well to pick out Marcus Rashford with a long ball, however the forward sent his effort wide of the upright.

United were able to break the deadlock a few minutes later when Diogo Dalot broke free down the right flank and sent a cross into the box, where McTominay was on hand to slot home.

While Coventry were unable to carve out any serious openings, the Red Devils doubled their lead shortly before the halftime break when Maguire rose well to head home Bruno Fernandes' corner.

The situation did not look like changing in the second half, as United bagged a third goal in the 59th minute when Fernandes got his name on the score-sheet with a deflected effort.

Coventry did give themselves a glimmer of hope after 72 minutes when Ellis Simms was given time and space to volley home a cross in the box.

The Championship side set up a nervy finish when they pulled another back six minutes later when Callum O'Hare's long-range strike took a big deflection off Aaron Wan-Bissaka and sailed into the back of the net.

Coventry got their reward in second-half stoppage time after being awarded a penalty for a handball on Wan-Bissaka. Haji Wright stepped up and converted to send the game to extra time.

With the game seemingly headed to penalties, Coventry thought they bagged the winning goal in the final minute when substitute Victor Torp turned home Wright's strike  but the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.

There would be no fairytale ending though, as United held their nerve to triumph in the shoot-out after Coventry missed two of their spot-kicks.
