Date: 28 February 2023

Venue: Ashton Gate

Julian Alvarez,  Manuel Akanji and Kevin de Bruyne and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega returned to the City line-up after the big win over Bournemouth on Saturday

The Citizens got off to the perfect start when Phil Foden opened the scoring after just seven minutes with a close-range finish following Riyad Mahrez's pass.

Bristol looked to get themselves back into the contest and went close on 19 minutes when Alex Scott forced a save out of Ortega with a curling effort.

The Citizens continued to dominate after that, but they had to wait until the 40th minute for their next chance when De Bruyne was slipped through on goal although the Belgian blazed over the top.

Other than the earlier effort from Scott, the home side were unable to find a way past the Citizens' defence in the first half as the visitors entered the break with a slim lead.

City came out firing in the second half, with De Bruyne and Mahrez carving out a couple chances but Bristol defence managed to hold firm.

The home side had a big chance to pull level in the 70th minute when Scott's superb cross found substitute Andreas Weimann, who failed to steer his on target from close range.

The hosts were made to rue that miss four minutes later when a neat passing move ended with Alvarez teeing up Foden, whose low shot deflected into the back of the net.

De Bruyne wrapped up the contest with seven minutes to play, with the Belgian midfielder finding the bottom corner with a strike from distance as Guardiola's charges march on to the next round.
