FA Cup Final Report: Chelsea v Liverpool 14 May 2022

FA Cup Final Report: Chelsea v Liverpool 14 May 2022

Liverpool's dreams of a historic quadruple remain on course after winning their first FA Cup title since 2006 after defeating Chelsea on penalties.

FA Cup Final

Result: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool (Liverpool won 6-5 on penalties)

Date: 14 May 2022

Venue: Wembley Stadium

The Blues made only one change from their win over Leeds United, as Thiago Silva was recalled while the Reds brought back Mohamed Salah to form a fluid front three with Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz.

Jurgen Klopp's charges started with a high intensity press and almost went ahead in the ninth minute after Diaz went through on goal and fired a low strike that forced a save out of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea absorbed the pressure in the early stages but they had a chance to break the deadlock in the 23rd after Pulisic latched onto a cut-back by Mount from the byline but he guided his effort narrowly wide.

While the Blues were on top, Liverpool were dealt an injury blow 10 minutes later after Salah hobbled down on the turf and he inevitably replaced by Diogo Jota.

The Reds regained their momentum in the latter phase of the first stanza as Jota came close to breaking the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with volleyed strike from Andrew Robertson's cross that sailed wide of Mendy's goal.

Thomas Tuchel's men started the second stanza brightly, as Marcos Alonso came close to giving them the lead three minutes from the half-time break with an in-swinging free-kick that brushed through goalkeeper Alisson's gloves and came off the crossbar.

Here are the 10 players "confirmed" to be leaving their respective clubs at the end of the 2021/22 campaign:

Tuchel made a change in the 66th minute as N'Golo Kante replaced Mateo Kovacic for fresh legs in midfield and while Klopp made a defensive switch in the last quarter of an hour, as he brought on James Milner in place of Naby Keita.

Liverpool had the ascendancy in the dying minutes and should have at least buried the game, as Diaz was denied by the upright with a strike at the near post and Jota had a much better chance at the back post but his volley also hit the woodwork.

The Reds remained a goal-threat in stoppage time as they peppered Mendy with shots but the Senegalese, who injured himself in the process of keeping Liverpool at bay held on for Chelsea, as the sides went into extra-time after a goalless draw in regulation time.

Liverpool's injury concerns ahead of the UEFA Champions League final continued, as Joel Matip took the place of the injured Virgil Van Dijk at the start of extra-time.

The Blues had better chances in the opening exchanges of extra-time but lacked the cutting edge and in the ninth minute of extra-time Klopp brought on Roberto Firmino in place Diaz to turn things around in the second stanza of extra-time.

However, both sides were cautious in the second stanza of extra-time, as the pace of the game went down and that affected the quality, sending the game to a shoot-out where the Reds held their nerve to triumph 6-5, with Alisson saving Mount's spot-kick before Konstantinos Tsimikas converted the winning spot-kick.

Here's how they started:

Chelsea: Mendy, Chalobah, Silva, Rudiger, James, Kovacic, Jorginho, Alonso, Mount, Pulisic, Lukaku

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Thiago, Keita, Diaz, Salah, Mane
