UEFA Europa League Final

Result: Marseille 0-3 Atletico Madrid

Date: 16 May 2018

Venue: Groupama Stadium

Atletico Madrid clinched their third UEFA Europa League title after a brace from Antoine Griezmann inspired them to a 3-0 win over Olympique Marseille in the final on Wednesday.

The French outfit should have broken the deadlock after just four minutes when Dimitri Payet played Valere Germain through on goal but he somehow sent his effort over the crossbar.

There was a lively tempo to the first half, although the LaLiga outfit found it tough to get the rhythm going as Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa struggled to get into the game.

However, Atletico broke the deadlock against the run of play as a defensive error saw Griezmann slipped through on goal and the Frenchman made no mistake from close range, 0-1.

Marseille were then dealt a blow on 31 minutes when star player Payet was forced off with an injury.

The loss of Payet did affect the Ligue 1 outfit as they struggled to carve out chances in the final third, with the last pass not being up to standard.

The score remained 1-0 to Diego Simeone's charges at the half-time break.

Four minutes into the second half, Atletico doubled their lead as Griezmann worked his way into the box before lobbing the on-rushing Steve Mandanda.

Marseille did see more of the ball as the second half went on, while Morgan Sanson blazed over the crossbar from inside the box after 66 minutes.

Chances then dried up for Marseille as Atletico took control of the encounter, while Rojiblancos shot-stopper Jan Oblak had a relatively quiet.

With 10 minutes remaining, Marseille went agonisingly close to pulling a goal back when Konstantinos Mitroglou's towering header crashed against the upright.

Atletico managed to round off the scoring with two minutes left as Koke picked out Gabi, who arrowed a low strike into the far corner as the LaLiga outfit romped to a fine win to clinch their third Europa title.
