The Italian striker, who has made a slow start at Liverpool, posted a picture on a social media account thanking Jordan Henderson - adding that the main thing is that the Merseyside club won.
"Thank you Hendo for letting me take the penalty. Stop drama now. We won that's what counts. We are a team and especially we are Liverpool. Come on guys," was his message on Instagram.
His Liverpool coach, Brendan Rodgers, was asked to comment on who should have taken the spot-kick and also played down the penalty row, saying that the end result is all that matters to him.
"I am clarifying we won the game 1-0. I have a number of outstanding penalty takers with Jordan and Mario and Rickie Lambert," he said.
"We won the game. It was an excellent result and performance, and it was always going to be a tight game."
Liverpool will head into the second leg with a one-goal lead, but will look to improve in order to progress to the next round.
Balotelli has performed below par this season, scoring only four goals from 22 appearances this season for the Reds, but has shown signs of improving over the last few weeks.
