The 26-year-old, who was signed from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, cost the Gunners a reported €22 million (R348 million), which some would deem a steal in today's inflated market.
In terms of fees paid for a goalkeeper, Leno's transfer is amongst the most expensive in the history of the sport – he is joint sixth on the all-time list, along with David de Gea.
According to FourFourTwo, Gianluigi Buffon's transfer from Parma to Juventus makes the Italian stalwart the most expensive keeper in the world, costing the Serie A giants €51.6 million (R816.8 million) in 2001.
Brazil's second-choice goalkeeper Ederson is second on the list after his €40 million (R633 million) move from Portuguese giants Benfica to English champions Manchester City last year.
In third is England international Jordan Pickford, who left Sunderland for Everton for a whopping €28.5 million (R451 million) last year, while in fourth place is Francesco Toldo, who moved (R449 million) from Fiorentina to Inter Milan for a fee of €28.4 million in 2001.
Bayern Munich and Germany No. 1 Manuel Neuer is the fifth most expensive goalkeeper in the world after the Bavarian giants paid Schalke €24 million (R379.5 million) for the 32-year-old's services in 2011.
