Venue: AMEX Stadium

Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson and former Brighton star Alexis MacAllister were handed starts after being on the bench in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Brighton looked lively in the early stages of the encounter and managed to cause a few problems for the Liverpool defence, with goalkeeper Allison Becker needing to be at his best.

The hosts got the breakthrough on 20 minutes when an error from Mac Allister gifted the ball to Simon Adingra, who spotted Becker off his line to score from around 25 yards with a lovely finish.

The Reds did get their reward five minutes before the halftime break as a well-worked passing moved ended with Mohamed Salah sending a first-time finish past goalkeeper Jason Steele.

Three minutes after the equaliser, Liverpool were awarded a penalty for Pascal Gross bringing down Dominik Szoboszlai in the box. Salah stepped up and calmly slotted home the spot-kick to send his side into the break leading.

The Reds should have had a third goal ten minutes into the second period when substitute Ryan Gravenberch was left un-marked at the far post and could only hit the upright from Szoboszlai's cross.

The home side responded with a double change for the final 30 minutes as Danny Welbeck and Jan Paul van Hecke replaced Evan Ferguson and Igor.

Brighton went on to level matters with 12 minutes to play when Solly March's inviting free-kick was turned home by captain Lewis Dunk to set up a lively finish in the encounter.

However, neither side were able to carve out a clear-cut opening in the final stages and were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
