Manchester United missed the chance to close the gap on Manchester City after playing to a goalless draw at Arsenal on Saturday evening.
The Gunners were without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka for the tie, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recalled Edinson Cavani, Victor Lindelof and Fred.
Fred nearly marked his return to with a goal just before the 20-minute mark but his attempted lob forced a superb finger-tip save from Bernd Leno.
The Gunners had a couple sights at goal themselves after 30 minutes, with Nicolas Pepe going closest with a curling effort from the right side of the box.
United were dealt a blow 10 minutes before the break when Scott McTominay was forced off with a knock, which saw the introduction of Anthony Martial.
Unfortunately, Fred's earlier effort proved the biggest opening of the first half despite the visiting side seeing more of the ball.
The Gunners went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock on 64 minutes when Alexandre Lacazette rattled the crossbar with a free-kick from the edge of the box.
With time running out, Pepe went saw his curling strike sail inches wide of David de Gea's upright on 82 minutes as the sides began to up the tempo before Cavani volleyed wide of the far post at the other end six minutes later.
In the end, neither side could find a winning goal and were forced to settle for a goalless draw, which sees United set a new club record of 18 games unbeaten on the road.
