The PFA announced the six nominees on Friday, with four Liverpool stars and two players from Manchester City on the shortlist.
Senegal's Mane is the only African candidate nominated this time around, and could become the third player from the continent to win the prestigious accolade.
Algeria star Riyad Mahrez lifted it in 2015/16 and Egypt's Mohamed Salah won it in 2017/18, while Virgil van Dijk is the current holder.
Mane scored 18 goals and assisted another nine strikes to help Liverpool win their first league title in 30 years last season.
He will have to fend off strong competition from teammates Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson, as well as City duo Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne, to claim the award.
The PFA also announced the nominees for PFA Young Player of the Year prize, namely: Tammy Abraham, Mason Greenwood, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Alexander-Arnold, who is nominated for both awards.
