Additionally, coaches Stuart McCall and Mark Hudson, have also left the club.
The Blades find themselves stone-last in the Premier League with five points, having won just a single league game since the 2023/24 campaign got underway.
The Clarets, who put five past Sheffield United on Saturday, sit above them in 19th place and Everton, who were recently handed a 10-point deduction, are currently in 18th spot.
Heckingbottom joined the club in 2021 and took the team back to the Premier League in 2023, but has since overseen only one win.
The 46-year-old made headlines on the weekend after he criticised the Blades' owners for making financial decisions instead of footballing ones.
"I wanted to keep the group together but we couldn't," he said, according to the Daily Mirror.
"We couldn't because of the last few years and the financial implications. If we'd tied them down (on longer contracts) then we probably wouldn't have sold those players.

"There wasn't a desire from the ownership to sell, but a necessity from a business point of view. We've been making financial decisions rather than football decisions. Of course, that affects me. I didn't want it to happen."
