Ten Hag Explains 'Aggressive' Row With Martial

Erik ten Hag has explained his furious touchline row with Anthony Martial following Manchester United's 1-0 defeat in the Premier League to Newcastle United.

Erik ten Hag has explained his "aggressive" in-game argument with Anthony Martial during Manchester United's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday night.

The French forward started ahead of Rasmus Hojlund, who recently returned from injury, but battled to make an impression in the 61 minutes he played.

In the first half, Dutch tactician Ten Hag was seen angrily addressing the 27-year-old seemingly for his lack of authority in the encounter before replacing him with Hojlund 16 minutes after the break.

Speaking after the game, the ex-Ajax Amsterdam boss said he was simply attempting to get a reaction from his players.

"It's not about Anthony Martial, it's about the team," he said, according to Goal.

"I try to energise the team and try to get a reaction from the team in this moment.

"As you see, we had a tough period and when you're coaching you are a little more aggressive, so that's normal."

The Red Devils are now seventh in the Premier League following Saturday's result, with Newcastle having jumped up to sixth place.

Anthony Gordon's 55th-minute strike proved to be the winner for the Magpies, who were by far the better side on the day and could perhaps have won the match by an even bigger margin.
