Keen to rebuild after a dismal end to their first full season of ownership of the west Londoners, Todd Boehly and the Clearlake Group were eager to spend big in the transfer window once again prior to the commencement of the 2023/24 season.
The two-time European champions thus made a staggering bid worth €116 million to Brighton Hove Albion for Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo.
They were not the only English side who was vying for his signature, however, as Liverpool were also keen on landing his services.
Up to the Santo Domingo native to decide, he made the choice to sign with the west Londoners, and he has now pulled the curtain back on why he opted against making the switch to Anfield.
"It was a difficult decision because you know Liverpool is a big team. But Chelsea were with me for a couple of months and I felt like I couldn't miss this move. They were with me in tough times when Brighton didn't want to let me go. It was a difficult decision, but 100% the right one," Caicedo told reporters, as per Goal.
The 22-year-old, however, struggled to make a significant impact in his first season in the English capital under previous Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Now under the tutelage of Enzo Maresca, Caicedo believes Chelsea fans will soon see the best of him.

"He [Maresca] plays like the same system that I played in Brighton. He wants the same. He wants me to show my quality, to have a good personality, and to show to my teammates that I am the boss on the pitch. For sure, I will be a good player with him," he added.
