A Manchester United legend has recalled the first time he saw Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo play against him.
No Space For Fortune In Ferguson's All-Time Man Utd XI
Red Devils defender Gary Neville says he remembers the day he watched the Portuguese winger line up against the Old Trafford club in a pre-season friendly for Sporting Lisbon in August 2003.
Neville admitted that he had never heard of Ronaldo up until that night, but he remembers watching the 18-year-old light up the stage.
"What a player, I thought," Neville writes in Sky Sports.
"After the match I remember sending a text to my brother, saying 'we need to sign him' and apparently there was a lot of talk about him on the coach after the game.
"Obviously players should never be involved in signings, but he certainly made everyone sit up and take notice.
"I'd never heard of him and I'd never seen him before that night, but there was a huge excitement among the players afterwards."
Ronaldo Reveals His Favourite Real Goal
The Old Trafford club ended up signing the Portugal captain for £12.24 million (R205 million) which then made him the most expensive teenager in the world.
