The Red Devils are in the market for a new marksman in this transfer window. In recent seasons, the Mancunians have brought in Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, but it seems neither has managed to consistently find the back of the net to satisfy the club’s ambitions.
Now, United are reportedly targeting either Ollie Watkins or Benjamin Sesko as their potential new No. 9. According to The Athletic, both players are high on the shortlist and the club is currently assessing the feasibility of each deal.
Watkins is seen as a more attainable option. Some within the club believe a fee in the region of £40 million (R957 million) to £45 million (R1 billion) could be enough to land the England international, despite Aston Villa said to be holding out for closer to £60 million (R1.4 billion) for their talisman.
The 29-year-old is especially admired for his proven Premier League track record, having netted 75 goals and contributed 36 assists in 184 English top-flight appearances.
Sesko, on the other hand, would come at a higher cost. The same report suggests that RB Leipzig have a gentleman’s agreement in place with the Slovenian striker that would allow him to leave for a fee between £69 million (R1.6 billion) and £78 million (R1.8 billion) —provided the buying club appeals to him.
While there are some reservations over his modest return of 13 goals in 33 Bundesliga games last season, United are said to view the 22-year-old as a long-term investment with resale value.
