English Premier League Report: Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City 14 April 2018

English Premier League

Teams: Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Manchester City

Date: 14 April 2018

Venue: Wembley Stadium

Manchester City are on the brink of securing the Premier League title after they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Citizens, who were hoping to bounce back from the midweek disappointment of exiting the UEFA Champions League, nearly went ahead as early as the second minute when Leroy Sane rattled the upright with a fine volley.

The visitors broke the deadlock on 21 minutes as Gabriel Jesus latched onto Vincent Kompany's long pass before calmly slotting past Hugo Lloris.

Four minutes later, City were awarded a penalty when Lloris was adjudged to have fouled Raheem Sterling in the box. Ilkay Gundogan stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 2-0.

Spurs, however, did pull a goal back just before the break when Christian Eriksen bundled the ball home from close range.

City looked to restore their two-goal advantage and they managed to carve out two chances after the hour, although Jesus and Sterling failed to convert.

Sterling was not to be denied on 72 minutes when the winger poked home from point-blank range after Lloris did well to keep out Aymeric Laporte's initial strike.

Spurs continued to push for a second goal in the remaining 15 minutes of the second half, but City remained resolute to see out the victory.

Following tonight's win, if Manchester United lose o West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, City will be crowned champions with five games to spare.
