Result: Southampton 2-5 Tottenham Hotspur
Date: 20 September 2020
Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Son Heung-Min scored four goals as Tottenham Hotspur came back from a goal down to thrash Southampton 5-2 at St Mary's Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With just under ten minutes gone, the Saints came close to breaking the deadlock. Ryan Bertrand's outswinging free-kick from the left-hand side fell kindly to Che Adams, who forced Hugo Lloris in to a stunning save with a fierce snapshot.
In the 26th minute, James Ward-Prowse's cross was cleared as far as the edge of the Spurs box. Moussa Djenepo pounced on the loose ball and drilled a low hard effort on the half-volley towards the bottom-left corner. Lloris was beaten, but the ball struck the outside of post and travelled wide.
Ralph Hassenhutl's side broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark. Former Spurs man Kyle Walker-Peters played a superb ball right between the two Spurs centre-backs for Danny Ings, who cushioned the ball perfectly before striking the ball brilliantly across the face of goal and in to the far corner.
Spurs equalised with their first shot of the afternoon on the stroke of half-time. Tanguy Ndombele turned his marker in the centre of the park and played the ball down the left for Kane, with the England captain squaring the ball to the far post for Son, who finished brilliantly in to the far corner from an acute angle.
Jose Mourinho took Ndombele off for Giovanni Lo Celso at half-time and Spurs took the lead two minutes after the interval. Kane played a defence-splitting through-ball for Son, who buried the ball low and hard in to the bottom left corner.
The visitors broke on the counter-attack in the 64th minute and once again Kane released Son through on goal with the South Korean keeping his composure for the hat-trick, this time with a right-footed finish in to the bottom right-hand corner.
Spurs were finding all sorts of space in behind the Saints defence, in particular Son as he grabbed his fourth with another superb finish as Kane once again turned provider with the cross in to the box.
Kane, having been the creator-in-chief all evening, deservedly got himself on the scoresheet in the 82nd minute with a typical poacher's effort.
Ings pulled a consolation goal back from the penalty spot in the 90th minute to make the scoreline slightly less emphatic in the end.
