Result: Liverpool 2-1 West Ham United
Date: 31 October 2020
Venue: Anfield
Liverpool claimed a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over West Ham United at Anfield on Saturday to go top of the Premier League table.
West Ham took the lead in the 10th minute. They built up on the left after Pablo Fornals laid it off to Arthur Masuaku, who held up play before delivering a cross into the penalty area. The initial threat was headed away by Gomez - but only as far as Fornals who continued his run to the edge of the 18 and produced a cool side-footed finish into the bottom corner.
Liverpool came close to equalising in the 24th minute. Mohamed Salah's leading pass sent Sadio Mane into the penalty area, but he was unable to force a shot after West Ham's defenders converged inside the 18. The ball was pushed out to captain Jordan Henderson, who slashed a shot inches wide of the post.
The Reds won a penalty in the 42nd minute. Masuaku went across to defend Salah, but caught the strikers' leg. The Egyptian international dusted himself off and converted from the spot.
In the 50th minute, Andy Robertson clipped a free-kick over the top for Salah, whose backwards header was comfortably smothered by Lukasz Fabianski.
Diogo Jota found the back of the net in the 78th minute but it was ruled out after a lengthy VAR check.
However, the Portugal international would not be denied in the 85th minute as Liverpool's pressure paid off. Substitute Shaqiri used Mane's offside position as a dummy, slipping a throughball into the 18-yard box for Jota, who finished easily high into the net.
As a result, Jurgen Klopp's side equal a club record of 63 games unbeaten at home in the Premier League.
