English Premier League
Result Everton 1-0 Arsenal
Date: 07 April 2019
Venue: Goodison Park
Arsenal missed the chance to move up to third in the Premier League after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had to settle for a spot on the bench as Alexandre Lacazette led the line, while there was a start for Mohammed Elneny in the midfield.
The host went ahead as early as the ninth minute as Phil Jagielka fired home from six-yards out folllowing a goal-mouth scramble in the box.
It was one-way traffic in the first half as Marco Silva's side dominated the ball, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Bernardo and Richarlison caused a number of problems in the final.
Arsenal, meanwhile, offered no real threat going forward as the likes of Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan had no influence on the game.
In an attempt to get his side back in the game, Gunners manager Unai Emery threw on Aaron Ramsey and Aubameyang at the start of the second half.
Everton had a chance to extend their lead just before the hour mark when Bernard broke free on goal, but Leno did well to thwart the attacker.
With his final throw of the dice, Emery introduced Alex Iwobi for the final 20 minute of the half as Arsenal pushed for an equaliser.
Despite the late push from the visitors, Everton managed to see out the closing stages to claim a vital victory.
