Reports claim that one of Argentina's 2022 FIFA World Cup stars, valued at €120 million (R2.1 billion) by his club, has said "yes" to a potential big-money move to Premier League giants Chelsea.
Arsenal 'Closing In' On First Signing Of 2023
Many of the beautiful game's biggest and brightest stars stood out at the global showpiece in Qatar, perhaps none more so than Argentine midfield sensation Enzo Fernandez, the 21-year-old midfielder who played a massive role in La Albiceleste adding a third star to their crest in the Gulf.
Off the back of Argentina's latest triumph, many of Europe's biggest teams are keen to acquire the Benfica star's services, with the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle United and Manchester United all reportedly interested in luring the young star away from the Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica.
However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, it is two-time European champions Chelsea who are in pole position to land the San Martin-born star's signature.
"Chelsea are now in direct talks with Benfica for Enzo Fernandez," Romano wrote on Twitter.
"Chelsea want to offer huge fee instead of paying release clause in one solution.
"Benfica always asked full €120m clause.
"Understand Enzo already said yes to Chelsea.
"Liverpool or Manchester United made no bid, as of now."
Benfica have insisted that they want their star man to stay until at least the end of the season despite there being a €120 million (R2.1 billion) release clause in his contract, but it seems most of Fernandez's suitors are reluctant to pay such an enormous figure in the January transfer window.
Kylian Mbappe Barcelona Bound?
Having only arrived at Benfica from River Plate in July, the 2022 World Cup Young Player of the Tournament could soon be on his way out of Portugal, with the Blues having reportedly already offered the Eagles £106 million (R2.1 billion) as negotiations continue between the two sides.
