11 Clubs Who Received A Guard Of Honour

11 Clubs Who Received A Guard Of Honour

Manchester City gave Liverpool a guard of honour in 2020

Liverpool received a guard of honour from Manchester City before being thrashed 4-0 on Thursday, but the Reds were not the first team to receive such a welcome, with Kaizer Chiefs among the teams to have received one in the past.

The Citizens welcomed Liverpool with applause on the pitch after the Reds clinched their first Premier League title in 30 years last week.

However, things did not go too well for the new champions afterwards as strikes by Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and an own goal by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain saw them being sent home with a rousing 4-0 defeat.

Pep Guardiola, though, insisted that Liverpool did not lose because they rested on their laurels.

"We beat a team who didn't come here just being the champions to celebrate. They came here to beat us," he said after the game, as quoted by HITC.

"I noticed on their faces in the guard of honour, I saw their faces in the first minutes and how they communicate with each other.

"That's why I give a lot of credit to what we've done today."

Liverpool are the only team to receive a guard of honour, with the procedure being a tradition in many leagues.

Manchester United famously gave Jose Mourinho's Chelsea a guard of honour in 2005, while Arsenal welcomed United, including their former star striker Robin van Persie, on to the pitch with applause in 2013.

In Spain, the guard of honour is known as a "pasillo", which translates to a "hallway" or "corridor". Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have given each other a few guard of honours in the past, even though there was controversy when Los Blancos denied their rivals the honour in 2018.

Zinedine Zidane said at the time that Real had opted not to give the new LaLiga champions a guard of honour ahead of an El Clasico after the Blaugrana had not welcomed them the same way when they had won the FIFA Club World Cup earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, in South Africa Amakhosi received a guard of honour from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2015, while Masandawana were honoured in the same fashion a year later by Platinum Stars.

The tradition reportedly goes back to 1955, when United's "Busby Babes" gave Chelsea a guard of honour – you can find more teams who have received guards of honour in the gallery above!

Note: The tributes mentioned in the article were not all guard of honours in history.
