Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was recently named Arsenal's new captain, becoming the latest African player to captain a Premier League side. Here are 11 stars from the continent who wore the captain's armband in England's top flight!

Patrick Vieira, who was born in Senegal but famously represented France, became the first player born on the African continent to lift the Premier League title when he captained the Gunners to glory in the 2003/04 campaign.

South Africa has had two inspirational leaders of their own marshalling the Premier League pitches, with Lucas Radebe becoming a legendary figure at Leeds United and Aaron Mokoena skippering Portsmouth.

Prior to Aubameyang's appointment in north London, the most recent African star to be named permanent captain of his club was Ivorian legend Kolo Toure, who wore the armband for Manchester City during the 2009/10 campaign.

City were also previously captained by former Algeria international Ali Benarbia, who had played for the likes of AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain prior to his move to Manchester.
