The Albiceleste were in search of a win at the Mineirao following their disappointing 2-0 loss to Colombia in their opening match of the tournament.
With both Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero being dropped to the bench, Lionel Scaloni tried a different approach, with the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Roberto Pereyra starting the match.
The clash was fairly uneventful for the first 25 minutes, although Paraguay went close in the 28th minute through Derlis Gonzalez. The attacker got on the end of a wonderful Matias Rojas pass, before releasing an effort. Argentina left-back Nicolas Tagliafico got there just in time to get his body in front of the shot, but the Albiceleste had their hearts in their mouths for that brief moment.
Less than 10 minutes later, Scaloni's fears became a reality as he saw his side concede – a goal that hurts his team's chances of progressing from the group stage of the competition.
Richard Sanchez was picked out in the box after a fine bit of work from Newcastle United's Miguel Almiron, with Argentina now in desperate need of a lifeline. Paraguay took a 1-0 lead into the break.
After starting the second half brightly, Argentina went close in the 50th minute, when Martinez's shot was pushed on to the crossbar. The rebound fell to Messi, whose venomous strike was then saved by the Paraguay goalkeeper.
Play continued for a few minutes before the referee consulted VAR, with Messi's shot at goal seemingly the topic of contention. With it appearing that the FC Barcelona forward's strike caught the arm of defender Ivan Piris, a penalty was awarded, albeit controversially.
Messi stepped up to fire the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal to equalise in the 57th minute, with Argentina now fired up and eager to claim all three points.
Four minutes later, Paraguay's Gonzalez failed to convert from the penalty spot, with Franco Armani making a smart save to deny his opponent. Just as Argentina pulled a goal back, they once again appeared vulnerable at the back.
Messi and Argentina pushed for a winner, but were unable to get their first win of the tournament. With Colombia beating Qatar in the other Group B match, Argentina will now need to win their final group match, but if Paraguay beat Colombia in their final group clash, Scaloni's men will be eliminated.
