Copa America

Result: Colombia 0-0 Chile (Chile won 5-4 on penalties)

Date: 29 June 2019

Venue: Arena Corinthians

Defending champions Chile advanced to the Copa America semi-finals after defeating Colombia on penalties in Sao Paulo.

Colombia looked like one of the favourites for the tournament after claiming three straight wins in the group stage phase.

Meanwhile, Chile and in particular Alexis Sanchez seemed to have regained some confidence after wins over Japan and Ecuador.

The first half proved to be a lively affair, with Chile going close after 13 minutes through Charles Aránguiz's diving header which forced David Ospina into a fine save.   Chile thought they had broken the deadlock five minutes later, but Aranguiz's strike was ruled out by VAR after Sanchez was offside in the build-up.   It was a busy opening half for Colombia's Ospina, who was called upon five minutes before the halftime break to keep out Sanchez's curling effort.   However, the second half was a complete a contrast to the first until VAR took center stage after ruling out Arturo Vidal's strike due to handball after 70 minutes.   Both nations opted for changes in the latter stages of the half, but neither could make the desired impact as the encounter went straight to penalties, where Sanchez netted the winning penalty after William Tesillo missed for Colombia.
