Copa America

Result: Argentina 2-1 Chile

Date: 06 July 2019

Venue: Arena Corinthians

Lionel Messi was sent off as Argentina clinched third spot at the Copa America with a 2-1 victory over Chile on Saturday evening.

Paulo Dybala was handed a rare start in the attack alongside Sergio Aguero and  Messi, while the former champions went with a strong line-up that included Manchester United's Alexis Sanchez.

Lionel Scaloni's troops got off to the perfect start as Aguero latched onto a pass from Messi before rounding Gabriel Arias to slot into an empty net on 12 minutes.

Dybala justified his starting berth by doubling Argentina's lead 10 minutes later with a neat finish over Arias after being set up by Giovani Lo Celso.

The game turned sour with just under 10 minutes left in the first half as both sides were reduced to 10 men as Messi saw red for shoving Gary Medel, who was also sent off for his part in the scuffle.

After a quiet start to the second half, Chile were awarded a penalty on 57 minutes, which Arturo Vidal expertly converted down the middle to reduce the deficit.

Chile threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser, but it was Argentina who went close on 77 minutes as Aguero's close-range finish was saved by Arias.

Despite a late push for the Chileans, Scaloni's men were able to see out the closing stages to claim the victory and the bronze medal.
