Copa America Final: Lionel Messi Lifts First Major International Trophy

Lionel Messi finally got his hands on a major international trophy as Argentina claimed their first Copa America title since 1993 after defeating fierce rivals Brazil in the final.

Selecao were unchanged from their victory over Peru in the semi-finals while Lionel Scaloni brought in Marcus Acuna, Christian Romero, Leandro Paredes and Angel di Maria.

After a slow start, it was the Argentines who broke the deadlock on 22 minutes as Di Maria made the most of his start by opening the scoring with one of his trademark lobs over Ederson after superb pass over the top by Rodrigo De Paul.

The sides went back and forth after that, with Messi going close with a strike from the edge of the box sailing just wide while Everton forced Emiliano Martinez into a fine save minutes later.

With Brazil trailing, Tite withdrew Fred for Roberto Firmino at the start of the second half as they went in pursuit of an equaliser.

The defending champions thought they had found the equaliser seven minutes after the break when Richarlison fired home, but celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.

Selecao began to turn up the pressure with time running out as Neymar turned provider to pick out Paqueta in the box, but the midfielder sent his effort wide of the mark with Romero lurking.

Messi almost put the tie away on 87 minutes but somehow failed to beat Ederson from six yards out after Martinez had produced a fine save to deny Gabriel Barbosa minutes earlier.

However, the Messi miss did not come back to haunt Argentina who held on to end their 28-year wait for a major trophy.
