Man Utd, Arsenal Crash Out Of EFL Cup After Heavy Defeats

Manchester United 0-3 Newcastle United

Manchester United were eliminated in the round of 16 after a heavy 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

Man United kept only four players in the line-up from their derby defeat against Manchester City, goalkeeper Andre Onana, Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

Miguel Almiron broke the deadlock for the Magpies just before the half-hour mark with a strike in the box after a splitting pass in the box and Lewis Hall gave Newcastle a two-goal cushion nine minutes before the interval. 

Joe Willock put the game to bed for Eddie Howe's men on the hour-mark with a strike on the edge of the box, as they progressed to the quarter-finals.

Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool

Liverpool booked their spot in the quarter-finals after edging Bournemouth 2-1 at Vitality Stadium.

The Reds had eight changes from their win over Nottingham Forest, as only Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Kostas Tsimikas were retained in the line-up.

Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock for Jurgen Klopp's men on the half-hour mark with a strike from a rebound but Justin Kluivert levelled matters the Cherries on 64 minutes with a header.

However, Darwin Nunez snatched the winner for Liverpool 20 minutes before time with a long range strike.

West Ham United 3-1 Arsenal

Arsenal exited the tournament in the last 16 after a 3-1 defeat against West Ham United in the London derby at London Stadium.

The Gunners made five changes from their 5-0 win over Sheffield United in the Premier League, as goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, Gabriel, Jorginho, Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson and Leandro Trossard were brought in.

West Ham went ahead on 16 minutes after an own goal by Ben White from a header and Mohammed Kudus doubled their lead early in the second stanza with a finish in the box from a cross.

Jarrod Bowen put the game to bed for David Moyes' charges on the hour-mark with a deflected shot on the edge of the box.

Martin Odegaard scored a consolation goal for Mikel Arteta's troops in added time, as the Hammers booked their spot in the quarter-finals.

Chelsea 2-0 Blackburn Rovers

Chelsea progressed to the quarter-finals after beating second-tier side Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues fielded a strong line-up following defeat against Brentford, with only four changes as Beniot Badiashile, Reece James, Enzo Fernandez and Lesley Ugochukwu were recalled.

Badiashile got the breakthrough for Mauricio Pochettino's men on the half-hour mark with a strike after a loose ball in the box.

Raheem Sterling doubled the lead for Chelsea on the hour-mark after a mistake at the back by Blackburn.
