Manchester City 2-0 Chelsea

Manchester City progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after beating Chelsea 2-0 at Etihad Stadium.

City made wholesale changes, with Jack Grealish, Julian Alvarez and Riyad Mahrez leading the attack.

The Blues, meanwhile also named a vastly different line-up from their loss against Arsenal, with Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech on either side ofArmando Borja while Raheem Sterling started from the bench against his former side.

After a scoreless first half, Mahrez broke the deadlock for Pep Guardiola's men early in the second stanza with a powerful strike from a free-kick on the edge of the box.

City quickly doubled their lead shortly before the hour-mark after Alvarez turned home a close-range range shot from a rebound after goalkeeper Edouard Mendy parried Mahrez's shot on his path.

Chelsea found the back of the net in stoppage time after Christian Pulisic's shot deflected off Nathan Ake on the line but the goal was chalked off for offside..

Liverpool 0 (3) - 0 (2) Derby County

Liverpool needed the heroics of goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to reach the last 16 after a nervy 3-2 win on penalties over third tier side Derby County following a goalless draw in regulation time.

The Reds named a completely different line-up after their win over Tottenham Hotspur, with Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino the only big hitters on the bench.

Liverpool had the majority of the possession in the first stanza but they could not carve out clear openings, with Derby happy to sit back and absorb pressure.

The game followed a similar pattern in the second stanza, with no clear opportunities, as the sides went to penalty shootouts.

Kelleher was the hero for Liverpool as he saved three penalties to help them win 3-2, with Harvey Elliott scoring the winning spot-kick.

Arsenal 1-3 Brighton and Hove Albion

Arsenal bowed out of the tournament in the third round after a 3-1 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners rotated the squad, only William Saliba remained from their win over Chelsea, although Gabriel Jesus, Granit Xhaka, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli were named on the bench.

Eddie Nketiah handed Arsenal the lead on 20 minutes but his strike was quickly cancelled out by Welbeck two minutes later from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the box.

Kaoru Mitoma gave the Seagulls the lead just before the hour-mark and Tariq Lamptey sealed the deal for the visitors with 19 minutes remaining.

Nottingham Forest  2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur crashed out in the third round after a 2-0 defeat against ten-man Nottingham Forest at City Ground Stadium.

Spurs made only four changes after the defeat to Liverpool, as goalkeeper Fraser Forster got his debut alongside Matt Doherty, Davinson Sanchez and Oliver Skipp who were all recalled, with Harry Kane supported by Ivan Perisic upfront.

Nottingham almost got an early lead after Sanchez's clearance in the box ricocheted off Taiwo Awoniyi and came off the post.

Renan Lodi eventually broke the deadlock for Nottingham early in the second stanza and Jesse Lingard doubled the lead for the home side shortly before the hour-mark.

Steve Cooper's charges were reduced to ten men in the last 15 minutes after Orel Mangala got a second booking and was sent off.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 Leeds United

Wolverhampton Wanderers booked their spot in the fourth round after a late 1-0 win over Leeds United at Molineux Stadium.

Boubacar Traore registered what proved to be the winning goal for Wolves in the last five minutes.

Southampton 1 (6) - 1 (5) Sheffield Wednesday

Southampton booked their spot in the fourth round after edging Sheffield Wednesday on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at St. Mary's Stadium.

Josh Windass broke the deadlock for Sheffield on 24 minutes but James Ward-Prowse restored parity for the Saints on the stroke of halftime.

The Saints went on to secure the win via the penalty shoot-out, with goalkeeper Alex McCarthy saving Dominic Iorfa's penalty to seal passage to the next round.
