Manchester United advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after defeating Vincent Kompany's Burnley 2-0 at Old Trafford.

Venue: Old Trafford

Erik ten Hag handed starts to Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen who were all on World Cup duty a couple weeks ago.

Fernandes carved out the game's first chance on eight minutes when he played Alejandro Garnacho through on goal, but the young forward was denied by Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

United's dominance paid off in the 27th minute when the returning Aaron Wan-Bissaka superably cut a long ball back for Eriksen to tap home from close range.

Burnley did see a bit more of the ball after that, with Belgian winger Manuel Benson going close with a strike from distance that was tipped away by goalkeeper Matt Dubravka.

The hosts did go close to bagging a second goal just before the halftime break but Anthony Martial saw his strike palmed away by Peacock-Farrell after creating some space in the box.

The lead was doubled ten minutes into the second half as Rashford embarked on solo run before finding the bottom corner with a neat finish for his second goal in the competition.

Burnley should have reduced the deficit in the 69th minute when Casemiro's wayward clearance fell into the path of Ashley Barnes, whose snapshot sailed over the crossbar.

There were couple chances at both ends in the closing stages, with Barnes squandering another opening, this time from six yards out while Antony forced a fine save out of Peacock-Farrell as it ended 2-0 to the hosts.

The Red Devils will now shift their focus to Monday's Premier League encounter against Nottingham Forest.
