Carabao Cup Report: Chelsea v Bournemouth 20 December 2017

Carabao Cup

Result: Chelsea 2-1 Bournemouth

Date: 20 December 2017

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Chelsea advanced to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after defeating Bournemouth 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.

In the sixth minute, brilliant Chelsea play saw Fabregas in on a goal but the midfielder squared the ball for Willian who tapped in from close range to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Cherries were dealt a major blow in the 15th minute as Jermaine Defoe was unable to continue, and was replaced by Jordan Ibe.

Five minutes later, Ibe pinched the ball away from Willian in a dangerous area, with the winger's eventual effort going wide of goal.

Chelsea were pressing for a second and Michy Batshuayi fell down in the box but the referee waved play in with 32 minutes gone in the game.

There would be no further chances in the game as Chelsea went into the halftime break leading by 1-0 at the Bridge.

The early exchanges of the second half consisted of missed great defensive blocks from both sides, with neither managing a goal.

Antonio Conte made a double change on the hour mark as Eden Hazard and Tiemoue Bakayoko came on for Willian and Pedro Rodriguez respectively.

Bournemouth created an opportunity of their own after applying a bit of pressure but Dan Gosling's shot went well over the bar in the 64th minute.

with 10 minutes left on the clock, the Cherries got an opportunity on the break and after getting across the field quickly, Ibe's eventual shot went just wide of the crossbar.

Bournemouth's search for an equaliser continued and they could have found it in the 82nd minute when Callum Wilson turned his marker in the box and got his shot away, only to be denied by Willy Caballero.

The visitors thought they would force the game into extra time with a 90th minute equaliser through Gosling, but Chelsea replied immediately with a goal from substitute Alvaro Morata to make it 2-1 and secure Chelsea's spot in the semi-finals.
