Carabao Cup Report: Burton Albion v Manchester City 23 January 2019

Carabao Cup

Result: Burton Albion 0-1 Manchester City (0-10 agg.)

Date: 23 January 2019

Venue: Pirelli Stadium

Manchester City advanced to their second successive Carabao Cup final with a 10-0 aggregate win over Burton Albion after winning the second-leg 1-0 on Wednesday.   On 14 minutes, a nicely worked free-kick from Stephen Quinn at the near post found the heel of Liam Boyce to force a save off City goalkeeper Arijanet Muric. Two minutes later, Mahrez posed another scare after his curling shot flew inches away from the goal of Collins.   The Citizens extended their aggregate lead after Aguero was well positioned to finish off a well-laid delivery from Kevin De Bruyne on 24 minutes.   Threatening a come back, the second-tier side launched an effort at goal when Will Miller's shot curled narrowly around the posts after three minutes.   Burton made a surprise alteration five minutes before halftime when Reece Hutchinson replaced Ben Turner.   At the restart for the second half, Burton introduced their second change with Quinn making way for Ben Fox.   The defending champions were almost pegged back after the restart, but David Templeton failed to get his shot on target to trouble Muric.   After 61 minutes, Aguero received a great chance to double his tally but the Argentine smashed the effort wide with the goal at his mercy.   The visitors took the opportunity to make their first change and did so with a double switch as Gabriel Jesus and Benjamin Mendy came on for Aguero and De Bruyne respectively.   The Brewers almost found their first goal in the overall tie on 71 minutes, but a stunning goal-line clearance from Eric Garcia kept Miller from finding the back of the net.   Following his sterling role in the first tie, Jesus almost capped off his evening with a goal but Collins proved steadfast to deny him from point-blank range to end off the match.
