Leverkusen lost 4-2 to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday, but Florian Wirtz still had reason to celebrate. The youngster, who joined Leverkusen from Cologne in January, scored his side's second goal in the 89th minute of the encounter.

It was only his fourth Bundesliga appearance, but the consolation strike saw him write his name into the Bundesliga history books.

He became the youngest goalscorer in the league's history at the age of 17 years and 34 days, breaking the previous record held by Nuri Sahin, who was 17 years and 82 days old when scored his first Bundesliga goal back in 2005.

Earlier this campaign, FC Barcelona starlet Ansu Fati became the youngest-ever goalscorer in UEFA Champions League history when he scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan aged 17 years and 40 days old.

Fati, who was born in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, replaced former Ghana international Peter Ofori-Quaye as the youngest player to score in the competition.

To date, the youngest footballer to score in a FIFA-accredited match is Myanmar's Aung Kyaw Tun, who was just 14 years and 93 days old when he scored for his country against Thailand in 2000, although it remains the only goal of his international career to date.
