DFB Pokal Report: Holstein v Bayern Munich

DFB Pokal Report: Holstein v Bayern Munich

Result: Holstein 2-2 Bayern Munich (Holstein won on penalties)

Date: 13 January 2021

Venue: Holstein-Stadion

Bayern Munich were knocked out of the DFB Pokal on penalties by second-tier side Holstein Kiel after a 2-2 draw in extra-time in the second round on Wednesday night.

Bayern made five changes from the defeat against Borussia Monchengladbach, as Serge Gnabry recovered from injury to start as a lone-striker alongside a recall for Lucas Hernandez while Corentin Tolisso, Bouna Sarr and Jamal Musiala were all given a run.

The Bavarians needed just a quarter of an hour to get the opener after goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios made a costly error by parrying a headed cross by Thomas Muller into the body of the onrsuhing Gnabry, who struck home from close range.

Muller and Gnabry combined again in the 37th minute as the visitors came close to doubling their lead but the former lifted a shot over the bar from close range after a headed pass on the plate by the latter.

Holstein got the equaliser immediately thereafter courtesy of a strike Fin Bartels after he controlled Jannik Dehm's long ball on his stride inside the box.

Musiala came close to restoring the lead for Hans-Dieter Flick's charges just before the break with a snap-shot inside the box but Gelios made a great save and the sides went to the break level pegging.

Bayern had a perfect start in the second stanza after Leroy Sane restored their lead three minutes from the break with a stunning free-kick from outside the box that arrowed into the top corner.

Musiala was unfortunate not to make it 3-1 for the Bavarians in the 66th minute after dribbling past the Holstein's defence and struck a low shot towards the bottom corner but his effort was parried into the post by Gelios.

Flick made a double change in the last quarter of an hour looking to kill off the game, as Robert Lewandowski was brought on in place of Musiala and Douglas Costa replaced Sane.

Bayern were trying to manage the game in the dying minutes but they succumbed to a stoppage time equaliser after Hauke Wahl headed home a cross from close range and the match headed to extra-time after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Joshua Kimmich came the closest to making it 3-2 for the Bavarians midway through extra-time with a lofted shot that looped over Gelios but came off the crossbar.

David Alaba had a wonderful chance to snatch the winner for the visitors in the last six minutes after a rebound fell on his path inside the box but his thumping effort was smothered by Gelios and the hosts held on in the end as the match inevitably went to penalty shoot-outs.

All first five spot-kicks were scored by both sides, it went to sudden-death where Bayern lost 6-5 after Marc Roca's decisive spot-kick was saved by Gelios which allowed Bartels to score the winning penalty for Holstein.
