The Bavarians made only two changes from their narrow victory over Werder Bremen the last time out, as Mats Hummels returned in place of Jerome Boateng while Leon Goretzka took the place of Serge Gnabry. The visitors threatened to go ahead in the early stages especially through Kingsley Coman who was whipping dangerous crosses from the left wing to the danger area but Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski failed to take advantage. David Alaba came close to breaking the deadlock for Niko Kovac's charges in the 24th minute as his free-kick from 25-yards out was guided onto the crossbar by Nurnberg goalkeeper Christian Mathenia' save before Muller struck wide from the rebound. Mikael Ishak had the best chance of the half for Nurnberg with five minutes remaining of the first stanza after being afforded space inside the box from a break attack, but he was denied by Bavarians shot-stopper Sven Ulreich at the near post. Three minutes into the second half, the hosts took a shock lead through Matheus Pereira who scored from a rebound after Ulreich parried Eduard Lowen's initial strike. Bayern started the second stanza on the back foot and needed inspiration as three minutes before the hour-mark they brought on James Rodriguez in place of Javi Martinez. Rodriguez came close to finding parity for Bayern with 20 minutes remaining after curling a wonderful free-kick towards the top corner but Mathenia somehow tipped it onto the bar and over. Gnabry, who replaced Muller at the beginning of the second stanza, levelled matters for Bayern 15 minutes before time with a strike at the back post following another great delivery from Coman. Nurnberg were awarded a penalty in the last minute of regulation time after Alphonso Davies elbowed Georg Margreitter inside the box. Tim Leibold could not find the winner as his effort from 12-yards came off the post and was cleared away, before Coman squandered a last-gap chance at the other end moments later as the encounter ended all square.
