Result: Schalke 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

Date: 08 December 2018

Venue: Veltins-Arena

Borussia Dortmund claimed the spoils in the Revierderby  after handing Schalke a 2-1 defeat in the  Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon.

The Royal Blues were under pressure from the get go after Thomas Delaney gave Dortmund the lead after seven minutes with a cool execution following an assist from Marco Reus.

Schalke went inches close to drawing level inside a few minutes, but unfortunately Daniel Caliguiri's left-foot shot was too high to cause any issues.

Reus was in the thick of things once more to set-up Paco Alcacer through on goal, but the latter missed from outside the box as he shot wide instead.

An attempt from Guido Burgstaller was well parried away by Dortmund's shot-stopper Roman Burki who plugged it from finding the top corner inside 29 minutes.

Dortmund pushed on and Reus missed from close range after failing to finish off a right-footed effort from outside the box following an assist from Alcacer.

There was a casualty just before halftime for the home side, with Burgstaller unable to carry on to be replaced by Hamza Mendyl.

In closing out the half, Schalke were on the up and continued trying to find ways inside the defence of the visiting outfit but were forced to head to halftime trailing by a goal to nil.

In the second half, Schalke started more promising and despite a few opening chances from the visitors, were going forward with more speed and attacking intent.

A penalty was conceded inside the box after Reus drew a foul from Amine Harit. After a lengthy VAR review, the penalty was confirmed to be the correct decision.

Caliguiri stepped forward to do the honours and he made no mistake to plug the spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Dortmund made their first change a minute later when Raphael Guirrerro came on in place of Jacob Brunn Larsen.

Both sides looked content with the day's proceedings after a dry spell in chances created from both sides.

This was until Jadon Sancho regained the lead for Dortmund when he capitalised on an assist from Guerrerro on 72 minutes.

A pass from Mario Gotze set –up Reus on the edge of the box and the German international saw it fit to take a shot at goal but it was saved by Roman Fahrmann.
