Report: Mainz 3-3 RB Leipzig
Date: 03 May 2019
Venue: OPEL Arena
RB Leipzig were denied a seventh successive victory in the Bundesliga after playing to a 3-3 with Mainz on Friday evening.
The visitors were already assured of a top-four finish following their victory over Freiburg last weekend, while Mainz are looking to finish as high possible without much to play for this season.
After a relatively quiet opening, Leipzig broke the deadlock on 20 minutes as some good work by Timo Werner ended with Lukas Klostermann tapping home from close-range.
It got better for Leipzig and Klostermann just over 10 minutes later, as the defender completed his brace with another close range finish after being played in by Werner.
Mainz went on the offensive in the latter stages of the half and they rewarded on 43 minutes, with Karim Onisiwo pulling one back.
However, it didn't take Leipzig long to stamp their dominance once again as Werner found the bottom corner from Emil Forsberg's pass to restore his side's two-goal advantage four minutes into the second half.
Mainz kept themselves in the encounter as Moussa Niakhate reduced the deficit in the 67th minute with a close-range finish following a corner by Danny Latza.
The hosts completed the comeback with seven minutes left in the half thanks to a strike from Jean-Philippe Mateta as the encounter ended all square.
