Bundesliga Report: Borussia Monchengladbach v Borussia Dortmund 22 January 2021

Result: Borussia Monchengladbach 4-2 Borussia Dortmund

Date: 22 January 2021

Venue: Borussia-Park

Borussia Dortmund slipped to fifth in the Bundesliga after a 4-2 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Borussen Derby on Friday evening.

Dortmund made two changes from the defeat at Bayer Leverkusen, as Emre Can was recalled alongside a rare start for Morey Bauza at right-back while Gladbach were bolstered by the return of Ramy Bensabaini, Denis Zakaria and Lars Stindl.

Florian Neuhaus thought he had given the hosts a dream start after firing them ahead in the second minute with a strike from the edge of the box but the goal was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a foul in the build-up.

Nico Elvedi eventually gave Gladbach the lead in the 11th minute with a powerful header inside the box after a cross by Jonas Hofmann from a free-kick situation.

Erling Haaland levelled matters for Edin Terzic's charges in the 22nd minute with a strike from a tight angle inside the box after a through ball by Jadon Sancho.

Haaland and Sancho combined again to good effect six minutes later, as the Norwegian gave Dortmund a 2-1 lead with a powerful drive inside the box after taking the Englishman's pass on his stride.

Elvedi responded for Marco Rose's men four minutes later as he equalised with a close-range strike after latching onto a rebound inside the box to complete his brace.

Gladbach had another great start in the second stanza as Bensebaini put the home side ahead four minutes after the break after going on a solo-run before drilling a strike into the bottom corner.

The hosts were finding the better chances after that, as Marcus Thuram eventually made it 4-2 in the last 12 minutes with a powerful header from Neuhaus' corner.

Gladbach kept on putting Dortmund under pressure, getting the better chances but they did enough in the end to clinch an emphatic 4-2 victory that saw them leapfrog fifth-placed BVB in fourth spot by two points.
