Bundesliga Report: Borussia Monchengladbach v Bayern Munich

Result: Borussia Monchengladbach 3-2 Bayern Munich

Date: 08 January 2021

Venue: Borussia-Park

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 away to Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday evening.

The Bavarians made three changes from the come-from-behind big win over Mainz, as Niklas Sule, Leon Goretzka and Douglas Costa were all recalled.

The visitors were on the front foot early, with Gladbach keeping it tight at the back but they were undone in the 19th minute after Florian Neuhaus conceded a penalty with a handball inside the box. Robert Lewandowski stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent goalkeeper Yann Sommer the wrong way to give Bayern the lead.

Hans-Dieter Flick's charges were 2-0 up in the 26th minute after Goretzka fired home a strike past Sommer from the edge of the box after he was teed up by Leroy Sane.

The hosts started the comeback with ten minutes left of the first stanza after Jonas Hofmann sent a low strike past Bayern shot-stopper Manuel Neuer after latching onto's Lars Stindl through-ball.

Bayern were punished for their high line again after Hofmann equalised for Gladbach on the stroke of half-time with another composed finish to complete his brace.

Gladbach carried their momentum into the second stanza and were rewarded with a third goal four minutes after the break with a stunning strike from the edge of the box that found the top corner.

Bayern had the attacking momentum after that but they could not create clear opportunities, with the hosts very disciplined at the back.

Gladbach were running out of energy to take chances on counter-attacks in the closing stages, playing with numbers behind the ball, as they constantly repelled every Bayern attack.

Sule came close to snatching the equaliser for Flick's men in stoppage time with a close-range header that was cleared off the line by Matthias Ginter as Gladbach held on to claim three points on the night.
