The French defender has caught the eye of some of Europe's top clubs with his performances for the Bundesliga club over the past couple of years.
That form saw the 22-year-old defender make his senior debut for France last year, and he is also set to make his 100th Bundesliga appearance this weekend.
With versatile star David Alaba reportedly set to leave the Bavarians at the end of the season, Rummenigge has now made it clear they will make a move for Upamecano.
"We will, of course, deal with it, not only with this player, but in principle with all the positions where we want and need to do something," he told Bild.
When asked if an early agreement for Upamecano was possible, he added: "It's too early for something like that, he's still a Leipzig player at least until the end of the season.
"But it's common knowledge that he has a clause in his contract."
