Bayern Chief Confirms Competition For New Boss With Liverpool

Bayern Chief Confirms Competition For New Boss With Liverpool

A Bayern Munich executive has confirmed that they and Liverpool are both competing for the same manager for next season.

Once the season comes to an end, both European giants will be without a manager. The Bavarians confirmed in February that they and Thomas Tuchel had agreed to part company at the end of the campaign, while Jurgen Klopp announced in late January that he would be calling time on his close to nine year tenure at Anfield.

Meanwhile, a former star for both clubs, Xabi Alonso, has been flying during the 2023/24 campaign. The Spaniard is yet to lose a game this season in all competitions as his Bayer Leverkusen side look to win the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and UEFA Europa League.

Speaking to the media earlier this week, honorary Bayern president Uli Hoeness confirmed that they, along with their Merseyside counterparts, are actively vying to lure the former midfielder to their respective dugouts.

"Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on [hiring Alonso]," Hoeness informed German outlet Ran.

"He's proven that he can be a coach for the big time. There are hardly any coaches who come into question who are currently free, who don't have a job or who are on sabbatical.

"It's not so easy to tell them that FC Bayern is the measure of all things."

Alonso has a contract at the BayArena until 2026 and it is rumoured that any club interested in taking him away from the Bundesliga champions elect will have to fork out a figure in the region of €15 million (R308 million).
