Two Real Madrid Icons Slam Lionel Messi's Ballon D'Or Win

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos and ex-Los Blancos captain Iker Casillas have slammed Lionel Messi's latest Ballon d'Or win.

The 34-year-old Argentine was awarded the 2021 Ballon d'Or trophy following his exploits for Barcelona and his country earlier this year.

Many, however, are of the opinion that Messi was perhaps less deserving of the prize than on previous occasions, with Kroos bluntly saying that the seven-time winner's latest victory was "absolutely not deserved", before insisting others were "ahead of him".

The 2014 FIFA World Cup winner went on to reveal that he voted for his colleague Karim Benzema, Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski, and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.

According to the Daily Mail, Kroos was speaking on his podcast when he claimed that his former LaLiga rival should not have been handed France Football's prestigious prize this year.

Meanwhile, another household name with strong ties to Los Blancos, Iker Casillas, also believes Messi was wrongfully awarded the accolade this time around.

"It is increasingly difficult for me to believe in football awards," he said.

Lewandowski's Words After Ballon D'Or Vote

"Messi is one of the best but you have to know who the most outstanding player after the season is. It's not that hard."
