As 28 October approaches, the world comes closer to hearing who will be succeeding Lionel Messi as the next Ballon d'Or winner.

The full list of nominees was revealed earlier this month; however, it seems there are two main frontrunners for the illustrious prize.

One of them is Manchester City's Rodri. The 28-year-old helped his club become the first English team to win four successive league titles last season, and was part of the Spain squad that won their record-setting fourth UEFA European Championship title, a competition in which he was also voted the best player.

The other player believed to be in serious contention for the prize is Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian attacker helped Los Blancos regain their Spanish and European titles last season with the 24 goals and 11 assists he completed throughout the previous campaign.

With the award ceremony nearing, the football fraternity is becoming more vocal about who should be the prize's latest recipient, and according to Neymar, his compatriot Vinicius is most deserving of the Golden Ball.

"Of course, I will be supporting him to win the Ballon d'Or this year. For me, there is no better candidate to win it," he told Band Sports, as per Marca.

"He is a guy who deserves it, because he is a fighter. He has suffered a lot throughout his life, but he has overcome all expectations and criticism. He has become an idol for all of us."
