2020 Ballon d'Or To Finally Be Awarded? Lewandowski Responds

2020 Ballon d'Or To Finally Be Awarded? Lewandowski Responds

Robert Lewandowski feels he deserves the 2020 Ballon d'Or.

With rumours suggesting the 2020 Ballon d'Or could finally be handed out, the frontrunner tipped to win that edition of the prize, Robert Lewandowski, has had his say on the speculation.

During the 2019/20 campaign, the Polish marksman was in mercurial form as his 55 goals and 10 assists in all competitions helped Bayern Munich claim a second treble.

Despite his otherworldly numbers, though, he was not awarded the prestigious Golden Ball due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the gala ceremony being cancelled altogether that year.

His world-class form was, however, not a flash in the pan as, in the following season, he would break the Bundesliga record for the most goals scored in a campaign (41), but would then lose out on the Ballon d'Or to Messi in 2021.

Although he did win FIFA's The Best Men's Player of the Year prize in both years, the Warsaw native has revealed he would gladly accept the Ballon d'Or award from 2020 if they are to finally name its winner.

"Of course, I would have liked to receive the Ballon d'Or award one day," the Pole tole Sports Bild.

"It's not that I'm angry or sad because this trophy is still missing. But my feeling is that it would have been my turn in one of the two years. In 2020 and 2021, I had the best years of my career.

"The one from 2021 belongs to Lionel Messi. I noticed that there are rumours about a subsequent award for 2020. This year was outstanding for me, I was at my highest level, we won everything.

"Let's put it this way: If I were to receive the 2020 Ballon d'Or four years later, I certainly wouldn't act offended  it would be a great honour."
