Wydad Chief: Before He Leaves, Rulani Promised Us...

Rulani Mokwena has promised to qualify Wydad Athletic Club for the CAF Champions League.

A Wydad Athletic Club chief has revealed the one promise that Rulani Mokwena has kept to the club before he leaves at the end of the season.

Earlier this week, the South African tactician’s agent confirmed that this would be the 38-year-old’s final season with the Red Castle.

There has been a lot of conjecture surrounding the Johannesburg native’s future in recent weeks amid unsatisfactory results, but after reports emerged that he had not been paid for the entire season, it seems the relationship between Wydad and Mokwena is now irreparable, as he is set to leave at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

However, while the former Orlando Pirates, Chippa United, and Mamelodi Sundowns boss will leave Casablanca, he has promised to leave the club in a better position than he found it – by qualifying Wydad for next season’s CAF Champions League. That is according to the club’s official spokesperson, Mohamed Talal.

"First, the club's board of directors met after the elimination against Moghreb Tetouan (from the Throne Cup) and discussed the most important files, including the issue of coach Mokwena,” the Moroccan executive said, as per Kooora.

"Mokwena will continue his duties and will not leave. The board of directors was surprised by the promotion of the story of the coach's delayed dues.

"External sources leaked incorrect information about Mokwena not receiving any of it, and the reality belies that. The coach and his assistant staff received all their dues.

"The club decided to keep Mokwena, who sent an email to the club president, pledging to lead the team to second place, provided he continues in his position for the remaining five matches. It was necessary to comply with his wish, while adding Amine Benhachem to assist him, given his experience and knowledge of the Moroccan league.

"Wydad needs its supporters at this particular time. I understand the position of the club's supporters, and I do not oblige anyone to attend the derby, as this is an individual freedom.

"However, let me emphasize that Wydad is still competing for second place and to return to the Champions League, which is the favourite competition for its fans."
