Wydad Boss Reveals Why He Took Under-Pressure Job

With Wydad Casablanca still in contention to win the CAF Champions League, Botola Pro League, Moroccan Cup and Arab Championship titles, manager Sven Vandenbroeck has now revealed why he took the under-pressure post.

On Saturday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld, the Belgian tactician will look to lead the Red Castle to a second successive Champions League final when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa's capital.

The titanic tussle with the DStv Premiership champions comes only two weeks after Vandebroeck was appointed the new head coach of the record Moroccan champions.

The 43-year-old has returned to a league he knows well, having previously coached his current title rivals FAR Rabat, but has insisted that the opportunity to take over the reigning African champions only has positives.

"I mean, I've been in the African continent for seven years now. Some French countries, some English-speaking countries," the ex-Simba boss said in a press conference Soccer Laduma attended.

"I spent two years in Morocco, in Rabat, and now I came back to Morocco. Actually, it's an easy question, because when you can go to a team which is in four competitions and you can win some trophies, it's an easy choice.

"Secondly, their image in Africa, it's quite big so also for me it's a step forward to sign for them. So, I am very happy to be working for this club.

"There are only positive reasons why I came, but especially being in all the championships. League, cup, Champions League and also the Arabic cup in July, is one of the main reasons.

"Working for a top four, five team in Africa is an honour and also for the level. So, these are the two main reasons why I signed for [Wydad] Casablanca."

Saturday will be the first time Vandenbroeck takes charge of a team on South African soil, and he will be hoping he can lead Wydad to a more favourable result than their last outing against Masandawana in Tshwane.

The north Africans were defeated 1-0 on their last visit to Sundowns' home patch in the 2019/20 campaign.
