The Confederation of African Football Says It's Difficult To Implement VAR In All Of Africa

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has responded to Pitso Mosimane's urging Africa's football governing body to implement VAR.

The Al Ahly head coach was speaking following his side's 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League when emphasised the need for the continent to begin to utilise the technology.

The South African used the Egyptian Premier League as an example, saying that if the North African country can institute VAR already, then an organisation the size of CAF should have had it long ago.

Despite this, CAF insists that now is not the best time to be worrying about VAR as they have bigger priorities, such as stabilising the finances of the federation.

Mosimane said nothing has seemed to change since the days of former CAF president Issa Hayatou, but the federation Head of Media Luxolo September was quick to defend his employers and his president Patrice Motsepe.

"All AFCON 2021 matches were on VAR, the inaugural CAF Women's Champions league was on VAR, and the upcoming 2022 World Cup African qualifiers will be on VAR," said September, according to iDiski Times.

"And then there are costs. Africa is vast and while some countries have this infrastructure some don't. These are objective realities.

"The costs of rolling out VAR throughout Africa and what you will need to do, are just very high and can run up to millions of dollars in a single month.

"We know in some African leagues they are already using VAR and that is fantastic. I know that the CAF referees' department is actively teaching and empowering many referees on VAR.

"There is progress, but it's not something we should approach in an emotional or sentimental way but we must be practical and give an objective view of our continent.

"President Motsepe is committed to this mission, to introduce technology and VAR in football. He has demonstrated that already and we should also not forget that the pyramids were not built in one weekend."
